Day 7: Through the Door
Never avoid brokenness again. Embrace it every day—every moment—as a doorway to God.
“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it."
It was the most horrible night of my life.
In college, I spent my summers working as a youth intern at a church. That day we had taken the kids water skiing. One of the young men was horsing around with the other kids, took in a gulp of water, and never came up. We didn’t notice until it was time to go home and we couldn’t find him. I’ll never forget the moment the divers found his body the murky water.
Up until that point in my life, God had seemed reasonable. Life had gone along about like I expected. That night, a life that made sense drowned in the river with the young man, leaving me with only questions and pain.
I have no idea how a loving God can allow things like that to happen. I have searched for an answer long enough to conclude there isn’t one. This world is broken—and not just a little. This world is tragically broken.
Jesus does not offer an explanation for brokenness or teach a way around it. He leads the way through it. Now that you have faced the fact of your fallen world, your are ready to take the first step with the Master: Trust. We begin tomorrow.
But today, what are some ways that you have tried to hide from brokenness? Are you ready now to face it squarely and follow Jesus through it?
