The motivation that I have to “do right” and grow is simply because I love God and I love people, not because of the reward in the “by and by”. If I love God, I want to please and be like Him now, not just someday in heaven, because we have a relationship now. If I love people, I want to be the best me that I can be now. For me that is enough motivation irregardless of what Heaven will be like. I get great joy and hope from knowing that I will be with Jesus someday in a new and amazing way, but I am living NOW.
I wanted to add that the MOTIVATION is not the problem for me, but I do struggle to “do want I want to do” just like anyone else (reading Romans 7 today coincidentally ☺).
Sorry, one more thing- the “demotivating” sin that I can fall into is the knowledge of God’s unconditional love for me. “Why does it matter what I do, He will still love me” is a trap that is easy to fall into. I think that this is very similar to the idea, “What does it matter, I will still go to Heaven when I die.”
