Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18
Let’s see… This summer I have lived on the Olympic Peninsula, the mountains of Canada, Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, Crater Lake… My life must be heaven on earth.
You would think so. But it’s interesting that Adam also found himself in a perfect setting. But God called it “not good.” What’s not good?
Isolation. I’ve felt it too.
I definitely understand the appeal of becoming a holy hermit. I get disgusted with people. I get disgusted with my wife. I want to disappear alone to the mountains where it will just be God and me. But there is no such thing as a holy hermit. Adam found out what I have also discovered: The hermit lifestyle is “not good.”
Loving other people is not a tack-on to the commandment to love God. It is part of it. There is no such thing as a good life without friends.
